NordVPN Launches ID Theft Recovery for UK Users Amid Surge in Cyberattacks Targeting Retailers

NordVPN has rolled out identity theft recovery coverage for users in the UK, offering up to £5,000 in reimbursement for related expenses.

This added layer of cybersecurity is a key reason NordVPN ranks at the top of our best VPN list. The identity theft insurance is included with the NordVPN Ultimate plan, which costs UK subscribers £5.09 per month (billed £137.43 upfront).

The launch comes at a critical time, following recent cyberattacks on major UK retailers including M&S, Harrods, and Co-op, where customer data was reportedly compromised.

The newly launched identity theft recovery feature complements the existing scam loss recovery protection already provided by NordVPN, further strengthening its commitment to user security.

This addition offers financial reimbursement for costs associated with reclaiming your identity after a cyberattack. It covers a broad range of personal financial assets, including your credit rating, digital wallets, bank accounts, mortgages, and loan details, ensuring comprehensive protection.

Beyond just reimbursing you, the tool is designed to actively support clearing your name if cybercriminals misuse your identity. It also acts as a safeguard to help prevent future fraudulent activity.

Even if you’ve had to take time off work to handle the fallout from identity theft, NordVPN’s ID theft recovery allows you to claim compensation for lost wages, helping you bounce back without taking a financial hit.

Scam Loss Recovery

NordVPN’s scam loss recovery feature is specifically built for those who have unknowingly transferred money to scammers. While traditional phishing emails and suspicious texts are widely recognised threats, modern scams, like AI-generated deepfakes and emotionally manipulative romance schemes are rising fast and pose serious dangers.

If you become a victim of such a scam or suffer identity theft, NordVPN provides a crucial safety net. Users have up to 12 months to claim up to £5,000 in compensation if their bank fails to recover the lost funds.

These protection services are available around the clock, ensuring you can get help whenever you need it. Currently, they are accessible to customers in the UK, as well as the Netherlands, France, Sweden, Germany, and Italy, offering peace of mind across several key European markets.

Is it worth upgrading?

Cyberattacks and scams are an unfortunate part of modern society and the recent attacks on UK retailers shows that anyone can be affected.

Following good online practices such as generating strong, unique passwords and ensuring links are genuine can go a long way to protecting yourself, but you can still become a victim – even if it’s not your fault.

The Co-op, one of the UK retailers hit by a cyber attack, said a “significant number” have had their data breached by hackers. Incidents like this highlight the importance of ID theft recovery tools.

But is it worth upgrading? For UK users, NordVPN Ultimate works out at £5.09 per month, compared to £2.39 per month for NordVPN Basic. In the U.S, it’s $6.99 per month for NordVPN Prime and $3.09 for NordVPN Basic.

While £5,000 in reimbursement may seem generous at first glance, some users might find it difficult to justify the added cost, especially when compared to the coverage available to U.S. customers.

In the United States, NordVPN users receive protection through NordProtect, which comes with the NordVPN Prime plan or can be purchased separately. This offering is far more comprehensive, covering identity theft, cyber extortion, online fraud, and more. Most importantly, it includes up to $1 million in cyber insurance, providing a significantly larger safety net.

By comparison, the UK plan offers less value, making it harder for users to see the benefit in paying more. However, for those who can afford the extra monthly cost, the upgrade may be worthwhile for the added peace of mind.

Regardless of the plan, educating yourself and others about good cybersecurity practices is essential to keeping your personal data safe.
